This is one of five Aso Gogaku. Nekodake is the second highest peak to Takadake, and its elevation is 1433m (Tengu Peak) while its elevation of Toho is 1408m. The name origin of Nekodake was said that the jaggy appearance looked like a shape of cat.
According to the state of corrosion, this has been said the most oldest volcano among the Aso Gogaku, and it has been frequently appeared in myths talking about Aso.

According to a myth, as for a jaggy shape, the ancient legend has it that although Nekodake could become the highest mountain among any mountains in Aso, rocks were piled up with a help of ogres. As a result, Aso Daimyojin got upset and slapped the head couple of times. This made a jaggy shape of Nekodake.

The central portion of Nekodake has one large rock, ”Tengu Rock”, rising to the sky. The view can vary depending on an observation angle; thus, it is called ”Shichimen Mountain”. The view from Takamori is lively and a full of variations, and it has become a symbol of town.
